On December 3, 2022, Christian Kath, a 42-year-old pilot, was flying a rented Piper Cherokee aircraft with his wife, Misty Kath, and their 12-year-old daughter, Lily, off the coast of Venice, Florida. The family had flown from St. Petersburg to Venice for dinner and were returning when their plane tragically crashed into the Gulf of Mexico shortly after takeoff. Wreckage was found about a third of a mile offshore, and the bodies of Misty and Lily were recovered within the following days. However, despite extensive search efforts, Christian's body was not found, and the search for him was called off on December 7.
Christian, who had only recently earned his private pilot's license in July 2022, had shared his excitement about flying and taking his family on such trips, fulfilling a childhood dream. The crash remains under investigation, and authorities have asked boaters in the surrounding areas to remain vigilant for any debris or signs of Christian's remains.
