On February 7, 1998, 28-year-old Jonathan M. Mcnabb was last seen hiking in Sequoia National Park in California. He had been dropped off past Shepherd Saddle Road on North Fork Drive with the intention of hiking approximately 20 miles to Lodgepole to retrieve his mail, a trip he anticipated would take 16 to 18 hours. He has not been seen or heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, McNabb was described as a white male, 5'2" tall, weighing 125 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was reportedly wearing a dark blue ski jacket, black Levi's, black leather hiking boots, and a black baseball cap, and was carrying a dark duffel bag.
When McNabb failed to arrive at his destination, a friend reported him missing, prompting an official search and rescue operation. The search efforts were concentrated on the Colony Mill Road trail and involved sheriff's volunteers and about 20 park personnel. The team utilized snowmobiles and search dogs. The search was complicated by a significant amount of fresh snow in the area, which, while potentially helpful for tracking, yielded no useful clues. A helicopter from the Lemoore Naval Air Search and Rescue was also brought in to conduct a grid search of the western part of the park.
Despite the search efforts, no trace of McNabb was ever found. Authorities believe that McNabb became lost within the vast wilderness of the park.
