On that day, she finished her shift at a local Subway sandwich shop and was seen on the street shortly after but never made it home. Although she had moved out of her family's home in September of that year, she had maintained regular and close contact with them. Over a month passed before her family officially reported her missing on December 31, 2003.
Investigators with the Monterey County Sheriff's Department believe that Lopez was murdered in King City around mid-December 2003. This theory is based on information from several informants who came forward stating they had seen her body in a specific location within the city. When law enforcement personnel responded to this location, they did not find Lopez's remains, leading them to believe her body had been moved. Despite the absence of a body, investigators were able to collect enough evidence from the scene to confirm that a crime had been committed there.
At the time of her disappearance, Amy Ortega Lopez was described as a Hispanic female with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'4" and weighing approximately 130 pounds. She had a distinctive tattoo of "1 F" on her left ankle. It is also noted that at the time she went missing, Lopez was on probation for check fraud and was wanted by the police for a probation violation. However, investigators do not believe this is connected to her disappearance. Her case is being treated as a probable homicide, and her body has not been found.
