On the morning of October 5, 1999, 62-year-old Ronald Leonard Farrell was last seen leaving his family's home on Alto Drive in the Valle Vista area of Hemet, California. He informed his wife that he was going to walk to the Walgreens Pharmacy, located several miles away near the intersection of Florida Avenue and Lyon Avenue, to fill a prescription around 9:00 a.m.
Farrell, a retired United States Air Force veteran, was known for taking daily walks and had a personal goal of walking 100 miles each month. It was not uncommon for him to be gone for hours at a time, exploring the busy streets of East Hemet or the quieter roads south of his residence.
Farrell was described as a white male, standing at 5'8" and weighing 155 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes. He may have had a mustache and was wearing prescription eyeglasses with gold rims. A distinguishing feature was a tattoo of an eagle with three small stars underneath it on his upper right arm. On the day of his disappearance, he was wearing a long-sleeved white shirt. Farrell took medication for high cholesterol but was otherwise in good health. He carried an Arizona identification card.
Farrell and his wife, to whom he had been married for nearly 40 years, had plans to drive to Riverside, California, later on the day he went missing. When he did not return home that afternoon, his wife contacted the authorities. An extensive search of the area was conducted, but no clues to his whereabouts were ever found.
