In May of 1985, a 61-year-old man named Richard Burks Hart, who went by his middle name Burks, disappeared from North Little Rock, Arkansas. A veteran of World War II, Hart's experiences in the war are believed to have triggered the onset of schizophrenia. In the years that followed, his condition necessitated full-time care, and by 1985, he was an inpatient at the Fort Roots Veterans Hospital.
