Fredia Louise Franks was a 44-year-old woman of biracial White and Native American descent, residing in Neosho, Missouri, in 2001. In August of that year, she embarked on a camping trip with her 42-year-old friend, Mark Terrell Walsh, and an 11-year-old girl, who was her daughter. They traveled in a 34-foot motor home, initially staying at a campground near Table Rock Lake in Arkansas, and it is believed they later moved to the Beaver Lake area in the northwest of the state.
Fredia was last officially seen on August 17, 2001, and has not been heard from since.
On September 9, 2001, Walsh and the young girl arrived in Rule, Arkansas, but Fredia was no longer with them. Soon after, Walsh was arrested and charged with the abduction, statutory rape, and sodomy of the child. He was subsequently convicted of two counts of first-degree sodomy and sentenced to life in prison. The young girl told investigators a disturbing account of what she had witnessed. She stated that her mother, Fredia, had tried to stop Walsh from sexually abusing her. In the ensuing confrontation, Walsh allegedly stabbed Fredia. The girl never saw her mother again after that incident. She also told authorities that she thought she saw a decomposing body inside one of the cabins she and Walsh had visited, but she could not remember the location.
Due to the violent circumstances of her disappearance, foul play is strongly suspected in Fredia's case. Over the years, Mark Terrell Walsh has given several conflicting accounts of what happened to her. In one instance, he claimed she accidentally fell on a knife during an argument. An inmate who was incarcerated with Walsh reported that Walsh confessed to slitting her throat and leaving her body in Bull Shoals Lake. In 2004, Walsh provided another story to investigators, stating that he had burned her body over three days and disposed of her remains in Osage Creek south of Green Forest. Despite these varied confessions and the harrowing testimony of her daughter, Fredia Louise Franks's body has never been recovered. The investigation into her disappearance remains open, a deeply troubling case of a woman who vanished while on a trip, with the primary suspect offering only contradictory and horrifying tales of her final moments.
