In the autumn of 2024, concern grew for the well-being of a 70-year-old man named Raymond Warmuth. He was last seen on October 17, 2024, in the city of Utica, New York. Described as a white male, standing 6 feet tall and weighing around 150 pounds, his last known attire consisted of a blue shirt, blue jeans, and, peculiarly, only one sneaker. Given the circumstances, authorities officially classified him as a vulnerable adult, which heightened the urgency of the search. The Utica Police Department took the lead in the investigation, and his case was formally entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System the following spring, on May 20, 2025. The search for Raymond Warmuth was complicated by his personal history. At the time of his disappearance, he was wanted by the Utica Police Department for failing to register as a sex offender after moving to the area. He was classified as a Level 3 sex offender, a designation indicating a high risk of reoffending, stemming from a past offense that involved the coercion and physical overpowering of a teenage girl. This failure to register his address with law enforcement added a layer of difficulty for investigators who were trying to piece together his movements and locate him. Public appeals were made for any information that could lead to finding him. For nearly two years, the search for Raymond Warmuth continued. The case took a definitive turn on June 12, 2026, when skeletal remains were discovered near the Utica Marsh. On August 10, 2026, the Utica Police Department received confirmation from the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office that the remains belonged to the now 71-year-old Raymond Warmuth. The department's Juvenile Aid Unit, which handles all missing person cases regardless of age, had been persistent in their search since he was first reported missing in November of 2024. The discovery of his remains brought a sad conclusion to his missing person case. An active investigation remains underway as police and the medical examiner's office work to determine the cause, manner, and approximate time of his death. The case evolved from a search for a vulnerable missing person, complicated by his legal issues, to a death investigation aimed at understanding the final chapter of his life.
