On a late March afternoon, 38-year-old Steven Joseph Gush was last seen by his family in Ledyard, Connecticut. An enthusiastic and experienced hiker, he was well-acquainted with the local trails in and around the Groton and Ledyard areas. Concern grew when he failed to return or make contact, prompting his family to report him missing. The search for Steven began, and his vehicle was soon discovered parked at the entrance to the Candlewood Hill Wildlife Management Area, located off Route 184 in
Groton. Investigators also found his wallet and cell phone inside the car, items a hiker might typically carry, which added a layer of concern to his sudden disappearance. He was reportedly last seen wearing a yellow jacket, a blue shirt, light blue jeans, and brown boots.
The discovery of his belongings initiated a massive search effort in the dense and challenging terrain of the wildlife area. The Groton Police Department, along with Connecticut State Police, deployed numerous resources in an attempt to locate him. The extensive search operations involved officers on foot, K9 units trained for search and rescue, and advanced technology including drones with thermal imaging capabilities to scan the wooded landscape from above. Divers were also brought in to search the ponds within the park. In addition to the official search, Steven's family and friends, desperate for answers, organized their own search parties and canvassed the surrounding areas, distributing flyers and pleading with local residents to check any outdoor surveillance or trail cameras for any sign of him. Steven is described as being 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing approximately 230 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, and a thick graying beard, as well as distinctive tattoos on his legs and one arm.
