In the quiet Mahnomen neighborhood of the Fond du Lac Reservation in Cloquet, Minnesota, concern grew for 31-year-old Peter Michael Martin, a male member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, after he was last seen on March 8, 2024. On that day, he had reportedly borrowed a small amount of money from a friend, assuring them he would repay it within hours. He later messaged that he was waiting for a ride to town to cash a check, which was his last known communication.
The following day, the mother of his child arrived at his home on Rustic Lane for a planned custody exchange and found the door open, prompting her to contact the authorities. Peter was known to be a homebody who doted on his daughter and didn't have his own transportation, often relying on friends and neighbors to get around.
When law enforcement conducted a welfare check at his residence, they discovered a troubling scene. The television was smashed, there were holes in the wall, and spots of blood were found throughout the house. Crucially, both his driver's license and tribal identification card had been left behind. A few days later, some of his belongings were discovered on Giiniwi Road; a black t-shirt and a black sweatshirt with one of his iPhones in the pocket were found, and nearby, a black jacket containing his other phone was found hanging from a tree. Peter was officially reported missing on March 11, 2024. Described as a Native American male with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'10" and weighing around 165 pounds, he has distinct tattoos on his chest and upper right arm, as well as pierced ears. At the time of his disappearance, he may have been wearing a yellow jersey, light blue jeans, a black hat, and possibly a black vest.
The investigation into Peter's disappearance is active and involves multiple agencies, including the Fond du Lac Police Department, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In the weeks and months following his disappearance, extensive search efforts have been undertaken, covering over 150 miles of diverse terrain on the Fond du Lac Reservation, including trails, lakes, and rivers.
