On May 28, 2024, 42-year-old Donald Hamaker of Girardville, Pennsylvania, was reported missing after a kayaking incident at a water-filled abandoned strip mine known locally as the "A-Hole." The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. when Hamaker's kayak capsized. A companion, who was kayaking with him, lost sight of Hamaker and discovered his overturned kayak.
