Mendez, who had been diagnosed with dementia, was last seen on the afternoon of July 5, 2023, after walking away from her daughter's home in Northfield, New Jersey. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a green floral pattern shirt, blue jeans, a headscarf, and dark sneakers. The last known sighting of her was from video footage that captured her near Doughty and Delilah Roads in Egg Harbor Township on the same day she went missing. Her family and local authorities were deeply concerned, particularly as she was new to the area.
Following her disappearance, a massive search effort was launched, involving numerous local and state agencies. The Northfield Police Department, along with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, led the extensive search.
They were joined by the Atlantic County, Camden County, and Gloucester County Land Search and Rescue teams, the NJ State Police Missing Persons Unit, K-9 units from Union County and the NJ State Police, and Central Jersey K-9.
