In the autumn of 2024, Vendula 'Wendy' Rose, a 41-year-old wife and mother from Marysville, Ohio, embarked on a planned solo hiking trip to Alabama. Originally from the Czech Republic, she had settled in Ohio after meeting her husband. Before her departure, she informed family and friends of her intentions to hike in the Dugger Mountain area and along the Pinhoti Trail.
Her preparations were meticulous; however, some of her actions were noted as unusual, such as leaving a work key with her employer and placing some personal belongings into a bank's safe deposit box. On September 20, 2024, she left her Ohio home for her cross-state journey. Her movements were tracked from Alabama to a brief trip to South Carolina, before she returned to Cleburne County, Alabama, on the afternoon of September 24. She was seen on surveillance footage making a purchase alone at a store in Oxford, Alabama, before driving to Cheaha State Park. She parked her silver Honda Accord at the Pinhoti Trailhead and was not seen or heard from again.
Concern grew when she did not return home by her scheduled date of October 2. Her family filed a missing person's report on October 4 with the Marysville Police Department. The investigation began, and her vehicle was quickly located in the parking lot near the trail. An intensive search of the rugged terrain was launched on October 5, involving K9 units, aviation teams, and numerous volunteers who covered more than 36 miles of trails, but initially, no trace of her was found. Inside her car, investigators discovered several notes that were described as 'abnormal,' leading them to believe she may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of her disappearance. Also found in the vehicle were a magazine and a box of ammunition that was missing seven rounds. The search efforts continued, with authorities and volunteers combing the vast wilderness of Cheaha State Park.
The search came to a heartbreaking end. A hunter discovered human remains in a covered campsite area off Alabama 281, approximately five miles from where her car had been parked. The discovery was made on November 30, 2024, and the body was found in a hammock. The Cleburne County Coroner's Office later positively identified the remains as belonging to Vendula Rose. Authorities stated that they did not suspect any foul play in her death. The case is a sorrowful account of a woman who set out on a planned wilderness adventure but never returned. The discovery of her vehicle and the concerning items within it shifted the focus of the investigation, which involved an extensive multi-agency search effort.
