In late September 2024, 60‑year‑old Steven R. Cloyd of Jonesborough, Tennessee, disappeared amid catastrophic flooding caused by Post‑Tropical Cyclone Helene. On September 27, powerful floodwaters swept across Washington County, prompting Cloyd to seek shelter in his Jeep along the Nolichucky River. He was in communication with his wife via text; his last known message was received at 2:29 p.m. that day, indicating the vehicle was being carried along by the surging water.
