Gene Allen McPherson was 42 years old when his life took a tragic and mysterious turn on the evening of Saturday, May 23, 1987. He was last seen in Craig County, Virginia, behind the wheel of his distinctive silver 1978 Ford pickup truck at approximately 5:50 p.m. At the time of his disappearance, he was a resident of New Castle, a small town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. The initial moments of his vanishing gave no immediate cause for alarm, but as time passed with no word from him, concern among his family and friends grew into a deep-seated fear that something was terribly wrong. This fear would soon set in motion a long and arduous investigation into his whereabouts. The first significant break in the case came days after McPherson was last seen, but it only deepened the mystery surrounding his disappearance. His silver Ford pickup truck was discovered abandoned at an I-81 rest area in Radford, Virginia, a considerable distance from where he was last spotted. The discovery of the vehicle without its owner was unsettling, and the scene offered few immediate clues. A further search of the surrounding area yielded another personal effect belonging to McPherson: his wallet was found discarded in the grass alongside the interstate. These findings painted a grim picture, suggesting that McPherson had not simply left on his own accord but had likely met with foul play. The location of his truck and wallet so far from his last known whereabouts pointed to a sequence of events that had taken him far from home. Years would pass before a clearer, more sinister picture of Gene McPherson's fate began to emerge. The investigation eventually led authorities to a man named John Edward Colclasure. Under questioning, Colclasure admitted to killing McPherson, providing a confession that finally offered an explanation for the man's long absence. Based on this admission and other evidence gathered during the extensive investigation, Colclasure was convicted of the murder of Gene Allen McPherson. Despite the conviction, a crucial piece of the puzzle remained missing. Colclasure never revealed the location of McPherson's body. He would later die in prison in 2002, taking that secret with him to his grave. The case of Gene Allen McPherson is a somber tale that began as a missing person report and concluded with a murder conviction, yet without the finality of a recovery. A man was seen driving his truck one evening and was never heard from again, his vehicle and wallet later found abandoned. The diligent work of law enforcement led to the confession and conviction of his killer, but the final act of laying him to rest has been denied to his loved ones, as his remains have never been found.
