Audrey Lyn Nerenberg, an 18-year-old from Brooklyn, New York, was last seen on July 15, 1977. She left her family’s home in the Canarsie neighborhood, telling her mother she was going to a nearby store to buy cigarettes. Audrey never returned, and she was not carrying any identification or medication at the time of her disappearance. Audrey had been diagnosed with hebephrenic schizophrenia and was an outpatient at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center.
She had been hospitalized in multiple New York medical facilities between 1974 and 1977 due to her condition.
Audrey's family received a ransom call later that day, but the caller never followed up. There were suspicions that Audrey could have been admitted to a hospital as a "Jane Doe," but searches of psychiatric institutions did not lead to any findings. Despite her struggles with schizophrenia, Audrey had no history of running away and was usually capable of seeking help if she got lost.
Audrey's case has also drawn attention due to potential links to Andre Rand, a convicted criminal associated with other disappearances in the Staten Island area, although no concrete evidence ties him to her case. Various leads, including a suspicious acquaintance of Audrey’s brother, have been explored, but her case remains unsolved.
