Renee Martine LaManna, a highly intelligent and compassionate 35-year-old woman, disappeared on a cold winter's night in January 1994. At the time, she was living in Fresh Meadows, Queens, New York, and was a student of nuclear medicine technology. Despite her academic and personal accomplishments, which included holding multiple college degrees by the age of 20 and serving in the Peace Corps, Renee struggled with severe anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia. The evening her life took a drastic turn began with a distressing argument with her long-term boyfriend in their New York apartment. The emotional turmoil of the fight, which included discussions of ending their relationship, seemingly triggered a severe mental health crisis. Later that night, after her boyfriend had gone to bed, Renee left their apartment and was found wandering barefoot and confused in the frigid streets of Queens. Police intervened and took her to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Though doctors recommended she be admitted for observation, Renee declined and was instead released into the care of her sister, who arranged for a limousine to take her to her home in Ocean City, New Jersey.
Upon arriving at her sister Margaret’s house in the 2500 block of Wesley Avenue, Renee was initially distraught but seemed to calm down as they shared a meal. However, the peace was short-lived. At approximately 7:00 p.m., as her sister was cleaning up, Renee abruptly announced she was going out for fresh air and ran out of the house into the freezing temperatures. She was inadequately dressed for the weather, wearing only a white sweatshirt, red silk pajama pants, and white socks, though she was carrying a navy blue bathrobe. Her sister immediately called for help, prompting a search by the Ocean City Police, the Cape May County Sheriff's K-9 Unit, and the United States Coast Guard. A police bloodhound picked up Renee's scent and followed it for about two blocks before losing the trail. Not far from where the scent was lost, investigators found her navy blue bathrobe.
In the hours and days that followed, the search for Renee intensified, but yielded no definitive answers. There was a reported sighting of her later that same evening at a waterfront bar in Somers Point, New Jersey, roughly four miles from her sister's home, where she was said to be acting strangely. This was the last time she was reportedly seen that night. In the years since, numerous tips and potential sightings have surfaced across the eastern United States, but none have been officially confirmed. One notable, though unconfirmed, sighting occurred in December of the following year, when a utility worker in a New York City subway station saw a woman who strongly resembled Renee staring intently at her own missing person poster. This sighting has led investigators to believe she may be suffering from a dissociative fugue state, a condition that could leave her unaware of her own identity.
