On the evening of April 23, 1996, 31-year-old Doris Fay Lentz left her home in Arlington County, Virginia, with the belief that she was going to pick up her young daughter from her estranged husband's residence in Fort Washington, Maryland. This was the last time she was ever seen. At the time of her disappearance, Doris was employed as a receptionist for a former United States senator. She and her ex-husband, a former naval intelligence officer named Jay E. Lentz, were in the midst of a contentious divorce. Court proceedings regarding their divorce were scheduled for the day after she went missing. Several days after Doris was last seen, her dark teal 1994 Toyota Celica was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of an apartment complex in a high-crime area of Washington, D.C. The car was found to be splattered with blood, though her keys, money, and credit cards were still inside the vehicle. Her purse was also in plain view within the car. The discovery of her blood-soaked car, coupled with the tumultuous nature of her relationship with her ex-husband, led investigators to suspect foul play was involved in her disappearance. Doris had previously filed police reports against Jay Lentz, citing abuse and harassment. The investigation into Doris Lentz's disappearance spanned several years and multiple states. Six months after she vanished, Jay Lentz moved with their daughter to Indiana. In May 2001, he was arrested in Indiana in connection with his ex-wife's disappearance and was subsequently charged with her kidnapping and death. What followed was a series of complex legal battles. He was convicted in June 2003 and sentenced to life in prison, but the judge later overturned the verdict. However, an appeals court ordered a new trial, and in March 2006, Jay Lentz was convicted again on the same charges. Despite the criminal convictions, Doris Lentz's body has never been found, and her case remains a painful mystery for her loved ones. The case against her ex-husband was built on circumstantial evidence, as there was no confession, no murder weapon, and no eyewitnesses. The prosecution argued that Jay Lentz had lured Doris to his home under the false pretense of picking up their daughter, who was actually out of state at the time.
