In the summer of 2000, Peggy Sue Ashley-Vinson, a 23-year-old mother of three, was living and working in Scottsville, Kentucky. In the early hours of July 29, 2000, her life took a turn that left her family and community with unanswered questions. Just hours before she vanished, Peggy had completed her shift at Federal Mogul. Following her work shift, she was reportedly involved in a dispute with her boyfriend, which led her to the local police department to file a report alleging she had been
assaulted with a deadly weapon. She left the sheriff's department at approximately 1:30 a.m. At the time of her disappearance, her two oldest children, ages two and five, were in the care of their respective fathers, while her youngest, an eight-month-old daughter, was with a babysitter.
After leaving the police station, Peggy drove to the A.O. Smith electrical motor plant, pulling into the parking lot around 2:00 a.m. Surveillance footage from the plant captured her final known moments. At 2:07 a.m., the camera recorded Peggy exiting her vehicle and getting into a white truck with a man identified as Calvin Smith. Smith later told investigators that he drove her to a payphone and then brought her back to her car. However, this claim was contradicted by the evidence; phone records showed no calls were made from the payphone in question, and the surveillance video did not show her returning to the parking lot. Two days after she was last seen, the babysitter who was caring for Peggy's infant daughter reported her missing when she failed to return for her child.
