Michael Phillip Proctor, a man originally from Moulton, Alabama, was 45 years old when he vanished from his residence at the Lake Houmas Inn in Houma, Louisiana. He had relocated to Louisiana in 2000 for a job in the offshore oil industry. Sometime after his move, he sustained an injury but chose to remain in Houma, captivated by the local wildlife and often exploring the swamps for turtles and other animals. The last confirmed sighting of Michael was on July 17, 2001. His family grew worried when he failed to make his usual contact with them and did not pay his rent, which was out of character for him. Concerned for his well-being, Michael's relatives traveled to Houma the week after he was last seen. Upon their arrival, they discovered that all of his personal belongings, including his identification, had been left behind in his room at the inn. At the time of his disappearance, Michael was described as a white male with brown hair that was shoulder-length, and brown eyes. He stood at 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed around 140 pounds. He may have had a mustache, beard, or goatee. Distinguishing marks included a large scar on one of his thighs and a tattoo of the Budweiser logo with the name "Sheila" underneath it on his left forearm. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and flip-flops. It was also noted that he had been in poor health before he went missing. Authorities were alerted to Michael's disappearance and conducted searches in the local marshes and other areas, but their efforts yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain a mystery. It is thought that he may have hitchhiked or traveled by bus, and could potentially be in either Louisiana or Alabama. The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office is the primary investigating agency for his case, which remains unsolved. The lack of any trace of Michael or evidence of his fate has left his family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
