In the days leading up to his disappearance, those close to James noticed a significant and troubling change in his behavior.
After attending a weekend empowerment seminar in Denver hosted by Landmark Education, he reportedly became 'scattered and ungrounded' and seemed delusional to his loved ones. This shift in his demeanor was alarming to his family, who noted he had never before left without warning and always maintained contact, particularly with his mother.
The last confirmed sighting of James was in Crestone, though the exact date remains uncertain. He mentioned to friends that he was planning to go to a hot spring but never returned from this intended trip. A friend had driven him to a local trailhead so he could clear his head, but James reappeared in town a short time later, described as being barefoot and confused, before heading back into the woods. A few days later, on August 3, 2004, his Jeep was discovered abandoned on a road off Colorado 17, approximately twenty miles north of Crestone.
