In the winter of 2005, concern began to grow for 40-year-old Darrin Wayne Hale, a resident of Gilbert, Arizona. He was last seen at his home in the area of Warner and Lindsay on December 14, 2005. A few days later, on December 17, a text message was sent from his phone to his employer, stating he was going to an urgent care facility and planned to return to work in four days. However, Darrin was never seen or heard from again. Those close to him knew something was wrong, as he maintained regular contact with his mother and sister in Texas, but that communication abruptly ended. Adding to the mystery, Darrin's vehicle and all of his personal belongings, including his clothing, were left behind at his residence, where he lived with his son. Darrin was a Black man with black hair and brown eyes. He had several distinct physical characteristics, including a previously fractured and disfigured left index finger, a pierced left ear, and numerous burn scars across his chest, arms, left foot, and on top of his head. He also had a small tattoo of a shark on his upper chest and was known to wear a gold watch and a gold hoop earring.
As weeks turned into months with no sign of Darrin, what began as a missing person investigation took a dark and tragic turn. The Gilbert Police Department's investigation uncovered a disturbing series of events within Darrin's personal life. It came to light that just three weeks before he vanished, Darrin had sought and obtained an order of protection against his wife, Sharon Denise Hale. In the court documents, he alleged that she had been following him, had cut him off while he was driving, and had even threatened to kill him. The investigation revealed a significant motive for foul play connected to the couple's finances. Family members informed police that Darrin was very upset after discovering that his wife had refinanced their home without his knowledge or consent, forging his signature and hiding the money from him. A concerned co-worker even held onto mortgage documents for Darrin that he claimed he never signed.
The grim truth of Darrin's fate was eventually revealed through the investigation. In April 2006, authorities arrested Darrin's wife, Sharon Denise Hale, and her father, Clarence Moton, in connection with his disappearance and murder. Investigators alleged that Sharon had enlisted her father to kill her husband. According to court documents, Moton confessed to confronting Darrin at his home, leading to a physical altercation during which he fatally stabbed Darrin in the chest and neck. What followed was a horrific effort to conceal the crime, with Moton admitting to dismembering Darrin's body. In a profoundly distressing confession, he provided shifting accounts of disposing of the remains, at one point claiming he had taken them to the California desert and at another, that he had burned the body. Sharon Denise Hale later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for her role in her husband's death. Though his wife and father-in-law were held responsible for his death, Darrin Hale's body has never been recovered. The case that began with a mysterious text message about an urgent care visit was ultimately a story of domestic turmoil and a calculated act of violence that tragically ended a man's life.
