Mary Anne Wesolowski, 13, disappeared on August 18, 1971, from her hometown of Glens Falls, New York. She was last seen around 3:00 p.m. walking away from her home on Broad Street. Mary was on her way to meet friends to go swimming at Haviland Cove Beach on the Hudson River but never arrived. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a white t-shirt, red and white shorts, and a black leather belt.
Mary left behind a note for her mother that read, "I'm leaving.
I might miss you." A previous note to her sister, written months earlier but never mailed, expressed her dissatisfaction with living in Glens Falls. Despite this, her family did not believe she ran away, as she had no history of such behavior.
There are suspicions that Kenneth Arnold Yarter Jr., a man later convicted of multiple rapes and a murder, may have been involved in Mary's disappearance. Yarter was living and working near where Mary vanished, though no concrete evidence has linked him to the case. Since her disappearance, Mary's Social Security number has never been used, deepening the mystery surrounding her fate.
