On a summer afternoon in 1971, 13-year-old Maryann Wesolowski walked away from her family's home in Glens Falls, New York, and vanished. It was August 18th when the young girl with light brown hair and blue eyes left her residence at 44 Hudson Avenue. She was on her way to meet friends for a swim at Haviland Cove on the Hudson River but never arrived. At the time of her disappearance, Maryann was described as being between 4'6" and 4'11" tall and weighing around 90 pounds. She was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, red and white shorts, and a black leather belt. Distinctive marks included a scar on her abdomen from an appendix removal and a butterfly-shaped scar on her chest. The circumstances surrounding Maryann's disappearance are complicated by conflicting accounts and unsettled family dynamics. Some reports suggest she was going to a local sandwich shop before heading to the swimming area. There are also varying stories about a note she may have left behind. One account mentions a note to her mother that read, "I'm leaving, I might miss you." Another letter, written to her sister but never mailed, expressed her dislike for Glens Falls and her eagerness for summer to begin. Her younger brother recalled that there were "a lot of problems at home" and has expressed his belief that she may have run away and could still be alive. He described his sister as shy and withdrawn but generally happy. Further complicating the narrative is an account from her brother who said that earlier in the day, he and Maryann had seen their mother's boyfriend at the beach with another woman. He claims their mother sent Maryann back to the beach to tell the boyfriend to come home. Over the decades, the investigation into Maryann's disappearance has remained open, though leads have been scarce. In 1995, a man named Kenneth Yarter was questioned in connection with her case. Yarter was a convicted felon, serving a life sentence for the 1974 murder of a 16-year-old girl and for several rapes. Although he lived in Glens Falls in 1971 and worked near where Maryann was last seen, no definitive evidence has ever linked him to her disappearance. The Glens Falls Police Department has revisited the case over the years, even working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to create age-progressed images of what Maryann might look like. Despite these efforts and occasional tips, her whereabouts remain unknown. The case of Maryann Wesolowski is a long-standing mystery, a story of a young girl who disappeared on a summer day, leaving behind a fractured family and a community with unanswered questions. Her Social Security number has not been used since she went missing, and no other suspects have ever been officially named.
