In the spring of 1983, a young mother named Faye Aline Self vanished, leaving behind a life and a family that continues to seek answers. On the evening of March 30, 1983, the 26-year-old, known to friends and family as Aline, entrusted the care of her infant daughter to her mother. She then went out for the evening with a female friend and two male companions to the Wagon Wheel Bar and Restaurant in Armistead, Louisiana. Later that night, she informed her friends that she was leaving to pick up her child, mentioning she had to work early the next morning. Faye never arrived at her mother's house and was never seen or heard from again. The following day, her car was discovered in the parking lot of the restaurant. The vehicle was locked, and while her purse and keys were missing, a new pair of shoes remained in the backseat. At the time of her disappearance, Faye was described as a Caucasian female, standing between 5'0" and 5'2" and weighing around 100 pounds. She had gray eyes and naturally brown hair, which she had bleached blonde and wore in a shorter style than depicted in most available photographs. Distinguishing marks included a hysterectomy scar on her abdomen, a vaccination scar on her left arm, and another scar on her right leg. She also wore an upper denture plate. On the night she was last seen, she was wearing white Levi pants, a multi-colored shirt, a gold-colored necklace, and a yellow watch with a flexible band. While her family acknowledged she had a "wild streak" at that point in her life, they have always maintained that it was entirely out of character for her to abandon her child, to whom she was devoted. Five years after she vanished, Faye Aline Self was declared legally dead, though her body has never been recovered. A significant development in the case came years later, in 2006, when a man named Robert Charles Browne, a self-proclaimed serial killer, confessed to Faye's murder. Browne, who was a native of Red River Parish and worked as a maintenance man at Faye's apartment complex, claimed he encountered her at the Wagon Wheel Bar on the night she disappeared. According to his confession, he went to her apartment later that evening, found her asleep, and used a chloroform-soaked rag to subdue her. He alleged that when he returned after retrieving a rope to bind her, she was already deceased. Browne stated that he disposed of her body by throwing it off a bridge into the Red River. Despite his detailed confession and his guilty pleas in other murder cases, Browne has never been charged in connection with Faye's disappearance due to a lack of corroborating evidence. Investigators have struggled to verify his claims, leaving Faye's family with a painful sense of uncertainty. The case officially remains an endangered missing person case, a cold case still marked by the absence of physical evidence and the unverified confession of a convicted killer.
