On a quiet evening, Barbara Rushton, a 45-year-old woman from Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, left her home on Old Forest Road. Her husband watched as she drove off in her white 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit, supposedly on her way to a friend's house for a card game, a routine trip of about 15 minutes.
