Jillian Dee Cutshall, a 9-year-old girl from Norfolk, Nebraska, was last seen on the morning of August 13, 1987. She had been staying with her father for the summer and was walking from his apartment to her babysitter's home, which was just four blocks away. Jillian never arrived, and the babysitter assumed she had stayed at home. It wasn't until later that day, when her stepmother came to pick her up, that they realized she was missing.
An extensive search was conducted, but it wasn't until three months later that Jillian's clothing and shoes were found in a wildlife refuge about ten miles from her home. The discovery provided some clues but no definitive answers. In 1991, David Phelps, a man who lived in the same apartment building as Jillian's father, was convicted of abducting her and was sentenced to life in prison. Despite this conviction, Jillian's remains have never been found, and she was declared legally dead.
