After school, Stephanie was dropped off at the local bowling alley by her mother to spend time with friends. She was last seen at approximately 6:00 p.m. walking on Highway 93 towards Challis High School, located across the street from the bowling alley. Stephanie never arrived home, prompting her mother to report her missing later that evening.
Despite an extensive search effort covering thousands of square miles, including the involvement of local authorities, the FBI, and hundreds of volunteers, no trace of Stephanie was found. Investigators suspect foul play, believing she was abducted by a stranger. A yellow pickup truck with red pinstripes, seen in the area at the time, is considered a potential clue, but it has never been positively identified.
Several individuals have emerged as persons of interest over the years, including Keith Glenn Hescock, who was linked to a similar case of abduction and later died in a police confrontation. However, no definitive evidence has connected him or any other suspects to Stephanie's disappearance. Despite ongoing investigations, her case remains unsolved, with authorities still pursuing leads and re-examining evidence as recently as 2016.
