On a Sunday afternoon, October 2, 1994, 23-year-old Lisa Ann Schmidt left her residence on North 2nd Street in Harrison, New Jersey, with the intention of going shopping. She informed her mother, who was caring for her young son, that she was walking to the K-Mart in nearby Kearny to make a payment on a layaway item.
