Jack Daniel Phillips, a 9-year-old boy, went missing on August 6, 1995, from Big Bear Lake, California. Jack, also known by his nickname "J.D.," was last seen near the Aspen Glen Picnic grounds between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. that day. He had been picnicking with his mother, her boyfriend, and his younger half-brother. According to reports, Jack had an argument with the adults before he disappeared and told a witness that he was tired of the fighting. He was last seen walking in the direction of his home, but he never made it there.
Jack was wearing a black tank top, gray shorts with a Tasmanian Devil logo, white socks, white tennis shoes, and a gold earring in his left ear. Despite an extensive search that covered a 20-square-mile area around Big Bear Lake, no trace of Jack was ever found. Several days after his disappearance, a family friend received a collect call that they believed was from Jack, but the call was disconnected before they could confirm the identity of the caller.
Convicted child killer James Crummel, who lived near Big Bear at the time, became a prime suspect in the case. Crummel later admitted to a fellow inmate that he had killed Jack, and authorities believe he may have disposed of Jack’s body in the ocean. However, Crummel never officially confessed, and he died by suicide while on death row in 2012.
Jack's case remains unsolved, and foul play is strongly suspected due to the circumstances of his disappearance.
