permanent neighbors. The day of April 12, 1996, began like many others for Alyne. She attended a chiropractor appointment, visited a tanning salon, and stopped by the home of a handyman she had hired. Later that afternoon, around 2:00 p.m., she was seen taking Fifi for a walk, pausing to chat briefly with a teenager in the neighborhood. This would be the last confirmed sighting of Alyne Barrick. She had plans to visit her brother that weekend but had called to cancel for reasons that remain unclear.
Concern grew when a neighbor realized it had been three days since anyone had seen Alyne out on her daily walk. On April 15, a welfare check was requested, and law enforcement officers had to force their way into her locked home. Inside, they found her dog, Fifi, unharmed in her crate, but the scene was disturbing. There were no signs of a forced entry, suggesting Alyne may have known her visitor. However, clear evidence pointed to a violent struggle. A sofa in the living room was out of place, and there were bloodstains on the carpet. The bedroom showed further signs of a confrontation; a glass from her nightstand was on the floor, and her bedding was bloodied and piled on the mattress.
