In the late summer of 1996, four-year-old Ashley La Shay Jones, a little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, vanished from her family's home in Memphis, Tennessee. Her disappearance on September 16 began under circumstances that would unravel a story of familial trust tragically broken. The day prior, Ashley’s maternal aunt, Joyce Wade Lindsey, had arrived for a visit while facing personal difficulties. Ashley's mother, Vicky Lee Morris, welcomed her sister into their home, allowing her to look after Ashley for the day. This was the first time Ashley and her aunt had met, and they seemed to get along well. The last time Vicky believed she heard her daughter was during a phone call to the house around 9:15 a.m. on September 16, when Lindsey reported that everything was fine. Vicky thought she could hear Ashley playing in the background, a sound that would become a haunting final memory. Later that afternoon, the situation took a disturbing turn when Ashley's 12-year-old half-sister, Erica, returned home from school. She found Lindsey intoxicated and Ashley was nowhere in sight. Lindsey gave a flimsy explanation that someone, possibly the regular babysitter, had picked Ashley up earlier, a story the parents knew to be false as they were the only ones who transported Ashley. Lindsey then took Erica from the home, driving erratically and preventing her from contacting her parents. They spent a night in a motel, and the following day, Erica witnessed more suspicious behavior. Lindsey took them to a laundromat to wash bags of clothes that had been in her car's trunk. She left Erica at the laundromat while she supposedly went to a car wash, but when she returned, the car was still dirty, yet there was a powerful odor of bleach emanating from the trunk. When Lindsey finally drove Erica home, Vicky and her husband, Carl Morris, had already reported both girls as missing. Realizing Ashley was not with Erica, Carl Morris pursued Lindsey and brought her back to the house while Vicky called the police. During questioning, Lindsey attempted to leave and investigators discovered a loaded pistol in her purse. A thorough search of her vehicle revealed the most incriminating evidence: blood stains in the trunk. DNA analysis confirmed with 99.9 percent certainty that the blood belonged to Ashley Jones. Joyce Wade Lindsey was subsequently arrested and charged not only with the kidnapping of Erica but also with the second-degree murder of her young niece, Ashley, in addition to theft and forgery charges. In 1999, she was convicted on all counts and sentenced to a lengthy prison term, though she has consistently maintained her innocence. Ashley’s body has never been found, leaving a painful void for her family.
