Peggy Wynell Byars-Baisden, a 23-year-old mother of two, was last seen on April 2, 1965, in Highland City, Florida. She left her home between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m., heading to the Chatterbox Bar, located near Eaton Park on Highway 98. Peggy was driving her light green 1959 Chevrolet coupe. Witnesses reported seeing her at the bar’s parking lot, where an unidentified Caucasian man appeared to be helping her with a mechanical issue involving her car.
This was the last known sighting of her, and neither she nor her vehicle has been seen since.
Peggy’s family reported her missing the next day. At the time of her disappearance, she worked as a waitress and was raising her children after a divorce. Her loved ones insist that it was uncharacteristic of her to abandon her children, leading investigators to suspect foul play. Despite extensive searches, no trace of Peggy or her vehicle has ever been found. Over the years, her case has remained one of the oldest unsolved disappearances in Polk County.
Interestingly, some have speculated that Peggy's case might be linked to another woman, Mary Margaret Cook, who disappeared in 1970 from the same area. However, authorities have not found evidence to connect the two cases beyond their geographical proximity and the fact that both women were young mothers living on the same street.
