The initial theory that she may have wandered to the nearby Mississippi River was largely dismissed due to the difficult terrain a toddler would have had to navigate, which included crossing streets and railroad tracks before descending a bluff.
The investigation soon shifted focus to a possible abduction. A significant lead emerged the day after Elizabeth's disappearance when a local auto dealer contacted police about a couple who had been staying in a motel behind the Gill family's home. The couple, who were waiting for a part to repair their light tan 1965 Chevrolet truck, had indicated they planned to stay in town for another week. However, when the part arrived on June 14, it was discovered that they had checked out abruptly, leaving their disabled vehicle behind. This mysterious couple became the primary suspects, and decades later, in 2010, the FBI officially reclassified the case from a missing person to a non-family abduction. Over the years, other leads were pursued, including a confession from a prison inmate in 1970 named Phillip Odell Clark, who claimed to have accidentally killed Elizabeth in a car accident. However, Clark provided multiple conflicting locations for the child's body, and no evidence was ever found to substantiate his claims, leading investigators to believe his confession was false.
Despite the passage of many decades, the search for answers in Elizabeth Gill's disappearance continues.
