That evening, while their parents were at a church service, Cynthia received a phone call. The sisters then left a note for their mother, Erma, stating they were going to a babysitting job. They were last seen walking west on Baseline Road, near Power Road, just a few blocks from their home. They never returned, leaving all of their personal belongings behind. Investigators later discovered the babysitting story was a ruse; the girls had actually planned to attend a party. Cynthia reportedly wanted to meet up with a teenage boy whom her father had forbidden her from seeing. Accounts from those at the party were conflicting; some attendees reported seeing the sisters there, while others stated they never arrived. The area where they were last seen, which was then semi-rural with cotton fields and orange groves, has since been significantly developed, but extensive searches at the time and over the years have yielded no trace of either girl.
