About a month after their disappearance, the abandoned Opel was found on a logging road not far from their home, with groceries, laundry, and a repaired television still inside. The circumstances surrounding the discovery raised suspicions, especially since none of the businesses they planned to visit had any record of seeing them that day. Despite extensive searches and investigation, there were no signs of foul play at the scene, and the family’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Fannie’s father, Byron Stuart, who had a history of erratic behavior and substance abuse, became the prime suspect, but there was never enough evidence to charge him. Byron claimed that his wife and children had been abducted by aliens, adding to the mystery. He passed away in 1996 without ever remarrying or having additional children.
