Khymbrly Marcella Scruggs, a 19-year-old student at California State University, Sacramento, was last seen on January 12, 1980. She lived with a roommate in an apartment near Fair Oaks Boulevard and Howe Avenue in Sacramento, California. On the evening of her disappearance, Khymbrly spoke to a friend from her hometown of Pismo Beach at around 6:30 p.m. She had no special plans that night and was scheduled to work the next day.
When Khymbrly’s roommate returned to their apartment the following day, she found all of Khymbrly's personal belongings, including her purse and identification, but Khymbrly was nowhere to be found. Concern grew when it was discovered that she had not shown up for work and had made no contact to explain her absence.
Foul play is strongly suspected in her case. Investigators focused on a neighbor who exhibited suspicious behavior, including having fresh cuts and scratches after Khymbrly’s disappearance. The man managed to evade authorities for three months before being captured. Although he was interrogated and eventually sent to prison for an unrelated rape, he was never formally charged in connection with Khymbrly’s disappearance.
