On a stormy December night in 1982, in the city of Aberdeen, Washington, a three-and-a-half-year-old boy named Tyler Jennings Inman vanished from his home. It was December 21st, and Tyler, a little boy with blond hair and blue eyes, was reportedly last seen in his bed. That evening, while his mother was out playing bingo, Tyler and his five-year-old sister were left in the care of a teenage babysitter. Later in the evening, the babysitter was relieved by his mother's boyfriend, who also lived with the family in their second-floor apartment near the Wishkah River. The events of that night took a bewildering turn, leaving a family heartbroken and a community with a lasting mystery. The circumstances surrounding Tyler’s disappearance are clouded by the chaos of a severe storm that battered the area with winds up to seventy miles per hour, a storm so intense it resulted in two fatalities. Tyler's mother returned home around 10:20 p.m. to discover her son was not in his bed. Her boyfriend stated that he had left the apartment for approximately twenty minutes to move a boat out of the nearby river. It was during this brief window of time that Tyler is believed to have disappeared from the apartment. The initial theory pursued by law enforcement was that the young boy may have wandered out of the apartment on his own and accidentally fallen into the swollen and turbulent Wishkah River. Despite this theory, extensive searches of the river and surrounding areas yielded no sign of Tyler. As years turned into decades without any sign of Tyler, the focus of the investigation shifted. The case, which was once considered a tragic accident, was later reclassified as a non-family abduction. This change in classification suggests that investigators believe it is possible an unknown individual or individuals took Tyler from his home that night. Tyler had several distinguishing physical characteristics, including warts on his right foot, extra skin on his right ear, and a "cauliflower" left ear. Over the years, organizations such as the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children have released age-progressed photos to show what Tyler might look like as he grew older, in the hope that someone might recognize him. The case of Tyler Inman remains an active cold case with the Aberdeen Police Department, a haunting reminder of a little boy who was there one moment and gone the next. This overview of the case reflects the enduring uncertainty and the multitude of unanswered questions that have followed his family and the Aberdeen community since that stormy night in 1982.
