Ara Denise Johnson, a five-year-old girl, disappeared from her family's mobile home in Big Sandy, Texas, on April 2, 1986. The child was last seen sleeping in her bedroom by her father, who checked on her between 1:00 and 2:30 a.m. When the family woke up between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m., Ara was gone, along with the orange bedspread under which she had been sleeping.
The back door of the mobile home was found open, but there were no signs of forced entry, and no one reported hearing anything unusual during the night.
Authorities quickly suspected foul play, believing that the abductor might have been familiar with the family's routines. Two days after Ara's disappearance, the case was classified as a possible kidnapping, and the FBI became involved, suspecting that the abductor could have crossed state lines. Despite search efforts, including the use of tracker dogs, no trace of Ara was ever found in the vicinity of the home.
Years after her disappearance, in 2007, convicted child killer David Elliot Penton was named as a person of interest in Ara’s case, as well as in the disappearances of other young girls in Texas. Penton, already serving time for multiple murders, was considered a potential suspect due to his pattern of crimes during that time period. However, he has not been formally charged in connection with Ara’s disappearance.
The case has remained unsolved, with no substantial leads or developments for over 30 years. Ara's family has continued to push for answers, but the investigation remains open with no closure in sight.
