On a day that should have been filled with the joy of the last day of school, nine-year-old Scott Allen Kleeschulte vanished from his St. Charles, Missouri, neighborhood on June 8, 1988. The young boy, a student at Coverdell Elementary School, was last seen at approximately 4:30 p.m. walking on Ken Drive in the direction of West Adams. That afternoon, a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area, leading to flash flooding.
Scott, who had freckles across his nose and a small scar on his chin, was wearing a black 'Rude Dog' t-shirt, khaki-colored pants, and red and black Puma high-top sneakers. When his parents returned home from work around 5:15 p.m., they grew concerned when he wasn't there, especially since Scott had a fear of storms. After searching the neighborhood and contacting his friends with no success, his family reported him missing to the police as darkness began to fall.
The initial search for Scott was extensive, involving law enforcement and community volunteers. Bloodhounds were brought in and reportedly tracked his scent for about five miles to Fox Hill Road before the trail went cold. Search efforts included scouring local woods where Scott often played, as well as numerous caves and tunnels in the vicinity. Authorities also dredged streams, considering the possibility that he may have drowned in the flash flood that occurred after the storm. However, no physical evidence of Scott was ever found, leading his family and investigators to believe that he was likely abducted. There were reported sightings of Scott both before and after the powerful storm, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his disappearance.
Over the years, Scott's case has seen several developments, though none have led to a resolution. In 2007, a task force was formed to investigate a possible link between Scott's disappearance and Michael J. Devlin, who had been arrested for the kidnapping of two other boys, Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby. The task force disbanded after finding no evidence to connect Devlin to Scott's case or any other missing children cases. Later, in 2011, St. Charles police re-examined the case, re-interviewing neighbors and obtaining a search warrant for a nearby home, but this too yielded no new evidence. A few years later, a Florida inmate came forward with claims that a former cellmate was responsible for Scott's abduction and other crimes, but this lead also did not appear to advance the investigation. The disappearance of Scott Kleeschulte remains an unsolved case, a painful mystery for his family who continue to hope for answers and closure.
