On a spring afternoon in March of 1989, fifteen-year-old Tonetta Carlisle was walking home from school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a journey she had made many times before. It was March 16th, and Tonetta, a freshman at City High School, was just a short distance from her family's residence on Hamilton Avenue. At approximately 2:55 p.m., her walk was abruptly interrupted. Witnesses saw a tan and yellow van pull up alongside the teenager. Several individuals reportedly exited the vehicle, forcibly pulled Tonetta inside, and sped away. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a pink and white striped blouse, a denim skirt, and white sneakers. Tonetta was described as being 5'1" tall and weighing 95 pounds, with brown, almond-shaped eyes and curly black hair that was cut short on the top and sides and longer in the back. The abduction was witnessed, and a concerned citizen and her husband chased after the van, managing to get the Tennessee license plate number, LKH 920, which they reported to the authorities. Later that evening, after Tonetta failed to return home, her mother, Nonie Sturdivant, grew worried and reported her daughter missing around 9:00 p.m. It reportedly took two days for law enforcement to connect the abduction report with Tonetta's missing person case. The license plate was traced to a man named Jeffrey Jones, who had a criminal history that included a conviction for rape and aggravated sexual assault, for which he had served eight years in prison. He had been released from prison about a year prior to Tonetta's abduction and had been accused of another rape just two months before she vanished. The investigation took a grim turn on March 18, 1989, just two days after Tonetta's abduction. Authorities located Jeffrey Jones, but he was found deceased inside his van from what was determined to be suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. He left no note, leaving investigators and Tonetta's family with many unanswered questions. Over the years, there have been various unconfirmed sightings of Tonetta in different states, and rumors circulated that she may have been forced into human trafficking and taken to California, but no evidence has substantiated these claims. In 2019, the Chattanooga District Attorney's Office reopened Tonetta's cold case, with a renewed focus on Jeffrey Jones as the primary suspect. DNA samples were collected from Tonetta's mother and brother in the hope that they might one day help identify her remains. The case of Tonetta Carlisle is a story of a young life interrupted by a brazen daylight abduction. Despite the passage of time, the investigation remains open, with law enforcement and her family still seeking answers and closure. The primary suspect's suicide left a void in the investigation, making it difficult to determine Tonetta's ultimate fate or the identities of the other individuals involved in her kidnapping.
