On a spring afternoon in Willow, Alaska, 8-year-old David Borer told his sister he was going out to play. It was April 25, 1989, and the young boy, a first-grader at Willow Elementary School, left his home around 5:00 p.m. He was reportedly heading for a sandbar near the partially frozen Kashwitna River, an area located near Mile 82 of the busy Parks Highway.
