Maria Socorro Kimbrell, 28, was last seen on June 19, 1991, in Huntsville, Texas. At the time of her disappearance, Maria was living with her husband, James Kimbrell, and attending Sam Houston State University as a criminology student. According to James, Maria left that day for a trip to Honduras with a friend to conduct research, but there is no evidence she ever made it to her destination.
All of her personal belongings, including her clothes, credit cards, toiletries, and car, were left behind.
Three weeks after her disappearance, James informed Maria's family about the trip. However, Maria had always said goodbye to her young son before trips, making her sudden departure without a word highly unusual. Shortly after she went missing, James moved with their son, isolating themselves without a phone or credit cards, and preventing anyone from mentioning Maria.
Although there were rumors of political involvement related to Maria's activism in her native Belize, where she supported opposition political parties, no evidence has emerged to support these theories. Her husband, James, who died in 1998, was never officially named a suspect, although some believe he may have been involved in her disappearance.
