In the early hours of February 18, 1992, sixteen-year-old Donna Jean Mezo vanished from the streets of Belleville, Illinois. Originally a resident of Crocker, Missouri, Donna had been in Belleville for a few weeks visiting her uncle and other family members. The night she disappeared, she was preparing to return to Missouri with her brother the next day and wanted to see her 20-year-old boyfriend, Jeffrie T. Mezo, one last time. At approximately 1:30 a.m., Donna left her brother's home to walk to a nearby fast-food restaurant on East Monroe Street where she had arranged to meet Jeffrie. She was last seen walking along East Monroe Street, wearing a blue denim jacket and a matching blue denim skirt, but she never made it to the restaurant.
Donna's disappearance was immediate and alarming, as she left behind all of her personal belongings, including her purse and makeup. In the initial stages of the investigation, her boyfriend, Jeffrie, was questioned by police and passed a polygraph test. The situation took a tragic and mysterious turn four months later when Jeffrie was found deceased in a secluded area of South Side Park in Belleville. He had been shot, and while a note was found indicating suicide, the gun was discovered in a nearby lake, adding a layer of complexity to his death. Although authorities stated the note contained no new information regarding Donna's case, its full contents were never publicly released. There were some unconfirmed sightings of Donna in the Fenton, Missouri area after she went missing, but none led to her discovery.
At the time she went missing, Donna was described as being 5'7' and 125 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. She had several distinct features, including a scar on her nose from a prior surgery, a birthmark on her right ear, and a lengthy scar on the outside of one of her ankles. Additionally, she had two non-professional, dark green ink tattoos: the letters 'MIK' on her right ankle and a smiley face on her right wrist. It was also known that Donna had asthma and was pregnant at the time of her disappearance; Jeffrie was reportedly the father of her unborn child. The case of Donna Mezo is a deeply troubling one, involving a pregnant teenager who disappeared without a trace while on her way to meet her boyfriend. The subsequent death of that boyfriend under puzzling circumstances has left her family with more questions than answers, and her case remains an unsolved and sorrowful mystery.
