However, the deal faced an unexpected delay, and John returned to Memphis from a business trip, telling friends he hadn't slept in three days. The day after he was last seen, John did not report for work, which was highly uncharacteristic of the driven and meticulous young executive. Concern grew throughout the day, and by the next morning, his parents had filed a missing persons report. An inspection of his new home in East Memphis revealed unsettling details: his suitcases from his recent business trip were found unpacked, and the garage door, which he habitually kept closed, was left open. Later that morning, at approximately 10:40 a.m., his Acura was discovered abandoned in an industrial area near the Mississippi & Arkansas Bridge.
