Katheryne Mary Lugo, a 4-year-old girl, disappeared from her home in Riviera Beach, Florida, on January 8, 1994. On that day, Katheryne's mother, Frances Moya, left for work early in the morning, leaving her daughter in the care of her then-boyfriend, Misbah Kazi, who is not Katheryne’s biological father. When Moya returned home in the afternoon, Katheryne was gone. Kazi claimed he had sent Katheryne to his native country, Bangladesh, and she would not return unless Moya agreed to give him full custody of their unborn child. Moya was eight months pregnant at the time and had been planning to leave Kazi due to ongoing problems in their relationship, including allegations of domestic abuse.
Authorities strongly suspected that Kazi abducted Katheryne as a way to manipulate and punish Moya. Kazi was eventually charged with kidnapping, but he was acquitted in 1995 after his sister, who initially testified against him, recanted her statement. Despite the acquittal, Kazi remained a prime suspect. He continued to harass Moya, making veiled threats and claiming he knew where Katheryne was but refusing to disclose her location. Kazi has since been incarcerated for an unrelated crime, but he has never provided any concrete information regarding Katheryne's whereabouts.
Katheryne’s case remains unsolved, though authorities believe she may still be alive. Age-progressed photos have been released, and her family continues to hope for her return. Investigators have kept the case open, and there is still an ongoing effort to gather information that could lead to her discovery.
