In the early morning hours of July 22, 1997, a 26-year-old man named Steven Alexander Clark vanished from Bay City, Michigan. On that night, Steven and his roommate, Christopher W. Cushway, had been drinking and set out to get more liquor. Their car sustained a flat tire, which Cushway parked in a lot near Madison Avenue. The two then proceeded on foot to a liquor store, made their purchase, and began the walk home, intending to cross the Veterans Memorial Bridge. However, their paths diverged when Steven reportedly wandered into an alley, and his roommate continued home without him. When Cushway woke up later that day, Steven had not returned to their shared apartment in the 400 block of Germania Street. He would not be seen or heard from again. Steven, known to his friends as Steve, was described as a good student who had attended Bay City Western High School before dropping out and later earning a GED. He had a passion for heavy metal bands like Metallica and Megadeth and enjoyed playing their songs on his guitar. In the week leading up to his disappearance, he had quit his job at the Texan Restaurant and moved in with Cushway. His family acknowledged that Steven drank heavily and that his personality could change for the worse when he was intoxicated. He had previously sought counseling for his issues with alcohol. While he had a history of disappearing for days or even weeks at a time, he had always, eventually, made contact with his family. This time was different. Two days after he was last seen, Steven's roommate reported him missing. The investigation that followed uncovered troubling details that suggested Steven did not leave on his own accord. Left behind in his residence were all of his personal belongings, including his cherished guitar, his vehicle, keys, clothing, and some uncashed checks. Furthermore, his savings account was never accessed after his disappearance. Foul play is suspected in his case, and despite the passage of time, his disappearance remains a mystery. He was legally declared dead in June of 2011. The case is an overview of a young man who disappeared under puzzling circumstances after a night out with his roommate, leaving behind every personal effect and financial asset, leading authorities to suspect foul play in a case that has remained unsolved for decades.
