In the winter of 1997, a 28-year-old woman named Lisa Noel Sledge vanished from the area of Marysville and the Tulalip Indian Reservation in Washington, leaving behind a life that included two young children. Her family last had contact with her around her birthday on December 8th of that year. Shortly after, Lisa was with her boyfriend, Erick Mattison, four-wheeling in his pickup truck in a wooded area on the reservation. Their outing took a turn when the truck became mired in mud. It was from this point that the circumstances surrounding Lisa’s disappearance become unclear, pieced together from her boyfriend's account and subsequent investigation. According to Mattison, after an argument, Lisa left the stuck vehicle on foot to find help. This was the last time he reported seeing her. The narrative provided by Lisa's boyfriend stated that after she walked off for assistance, he remained with the disabled truck. He and Lisa had apparently first gone to a friend's home on the reservation to ask for help but were unsuccessful. Later, in the early morning hours of December 13th, Mattison returned to that same friend's house, but this time he was alone, still seeking help for the truck. He claimed that Lisa had not returned after leaving to find aid. The truck, a key piece of the story, was not recovered by authorities until early January 1998. It was discovered abandoned and partially stripped in a different remote area on the Tulalip Reservation. The realization that the vehicle had been reported stolen added another layer of complexity to the investigation. Lisa's family officially reported her missing on December 12, concerned because it was highly uncharacteristic of her to be out of contact, especially given her responsibilities as a mother to two children, one of whom has Down Syndrome. Years have passed without any sign of Lisa Sledge, and her case remains an unsolved mystery that has deeply affected her family, who raised her children in her absence. The Marysville Police Department has investigated her disappearance as a suspicious missing person case. Over the years, detectives have pursued various leads, many of which stemmed from rumors circulating within the community. One of the most persistent theories, which has been told with several variations, is that Lisa may have died from an accidental drug overdose. It is speculated that the individuals with her at the time panicked and concealed her body rather than notifying the authorities. Despite extensive searches and numerous interviews conducted over the decades, no conclusive evidence has emerged to confirm what happened to Lisa. Her family and police believe it is likely she died in December 1997, but without her recovery, the definitive story of her final moments remains unknown, a lingering and painful question for those she left behind.
