She is believed to have been abducted by her 26-year-old boyfriend, Manuel Antonio Quiroz Jr. Veronica's family had forbidden her from seeing Quiroz, but she disappeared that morning, and the two were last sighted together in Reno and Sparks, Nevada, in July 2003. There is speculation that they may be in Mexico, possibly posing as siblings.
Veronica is described as 5'5" to 5'7" tall, weighing 150 to 170 pounds, with dark brown hair and red highlights. She has a distinctive dimple on her left cheek and previously fractured her left elbow as a toddler, which might be visible in X-rays. Quiroz, who has a criminal record involving sexual assault and weapons charges, is considered dangerous. Authorities believe Veronica may have initially left voluntarily but could now be held against her will due to Quiroz's history and her young age at the time of her disappearance. A felony warrant is issued for Quiroz, but despite multiple investigations, they remain missing.
