In the early morning hours of June 23, 2002, two-year-old Jyrine Harris vanished from his bed in his grandmother's home on 40th Street in Irvington, New Jersey. He was last seen at approximately 1:00 a.m., wearing a diaper with Muppet characters on it and a cast on his right leg from his knee to his toe. At the time of his disappearance, Jyrine was living with his grandmother and eight other relatives. His teenage sister was downstairs with her boyfriend when Jyrine went missing. The family conducted a search of the house before notifying the police around 5:00 a.m. Due to a fractured leg that limited his mobility, it was considered unlikely that Jyrine could have wandered off on his own.
Jyrine had been placed in his grandmother's care about a month prior to his disappearance, after his mother was arrested on child abuse charges.
These charges were later dropped when it was determined that Jyrine's frequent fractures could have been caused by osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare condition that makes bones brittle.
