In the early morning hours of June 11, 2003, in St. Louis, Missouri, a frantic 911 call was placed by a father, Dawan Ferguson. He reported that his 1999 Ford Expedition SUV had been stolen with his nine-year-old son, Christian, asleep in the backseat. According to Dawan, he had stopped at a pay phone to call the hospital where he was taking Christian, who he said had been ill, when the vehicle was taken.
Christian was a child with significant challenges; he was severely disabled due to a rare metabolic disorder called citrullinemia. This condition required him to have daily medication to prevent a life-threatening buildup of ammonia in his system. At the time he vanished, he was wearing only a diaper and was wrapped in a multicolored blanket. The story immediately sparked a massive search, as the urgency of Christianï s medical needs meant that time was critically short.
The investigation into Christian's disappearance quickly began to raise questions. About two hours after the initial report, the Ford Expedition was found abandoned in Ferguson, Missouri, just a few miles from where it was allegedly stolen. Inside the unlocked vehicle, with the keys still in the ignition, were numerous valuables, including a laptop and cell phones, but there was no sign of the missing boy. Investigators noted inconsistencies in Dawan Ferguson's account of events and shared that he refused to take a polygraph test before ceasing his cooperation with the police altogether. It came to light that Christianï s parents were engaged in a bitter custody dispute, and Christian's mother had previously expressed concerns about his father neglecting his complex medical care. As the days turned into weeks and then years, the hope of finding Christian alive faded, but the search for answers continued.
For over sixteen years, the case remained a painful, unsolved mystery for Christian's mother and the community. Then, in October 2019, a major breakthrough occurred when authorities arrested Dawan Ferguson and charged him with the murder of his son. A witness testified that Dawan had confessed to her that Christian was already deceased before the 911 call was ever made. In July 2022, Dawan Ferguson was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
