In the autumn of 2003, 32-year-old Edward "Eddie" Lee Vannatter Jr. was living in a rental home on East 345th Street in Eastlake, Ohio, with his roommate, John Caputo. The last time anyone reported seeing Eddie was in early October of that year. According to his roommate, Eddie came home one evening with an unknown man named Mark, and the two had drugs and related items with them. Caputo, who was on probation at the time, stated that he did not want drugs in the house, which led to a minor physical altercation between the three men. Following the disagreement, Eddie and Mark left the residence together, and Eddie has not been seen or heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a 32-year-old white male with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'5" and weighing around 160 pounds. He has a scar on his left cheek and was known to typically wear blue jeans, a t-shirt, and a gray pullover sweatshirt. Initially, Eddie's family was not alarmed by his absence. He had a history of drug addiction, specifically to methamphetamine, and had previously disappeared for periods of up to a month at a time. His loved ones assumed he was likely staying with friends and would eventually resurface. However, as the weeks turned into months and Thanksgiving passed without any word from him, their concern grew. It was then that his mother and stepfather officially reported him missing to the authorities. His mother noted that it was out of character for him to leave with someone he had just met. Adding to the suspicious nature of his disappearance, his roommate, John Caputo, quickly disposed of all of Eddie's belongings, later claiming he did so out of anger. The investigation into Eddie's disappearance has been fraught with suspicion and a lack of concrete leads. Law enforcement officials believe that John Caputo may possess more information about Eddie's fate than he has revealed, though no official suspects have been named in the case. Years later, in 2012, Caputo contacted Eddie's mother, leaving a voicemail in which he threatened suicide and denied any involvement in her son's disappearance. Instead of taking his own life, Caputo turned himself in to the police a week later for a series of bank robberies in Lake County and is currently incarcerated. It has been noted that not long after Eddie went missing, Caputo told his ex-wife that he had committed a crime with no statute of limitations. Investigators have also considered the possibility that Eddie's body may have been disposed of in West Virginia, a place Caputo had ties to and had once mentioned as a good location to hide a body. At one point, Caputo, through his lawyer, attempted to negotiate a deal to lead police to Eddie's remains, but the arrangement never came to fruition. The case of Edward Vannatter remains an open and troubling mystery, with his family still searching for answers.
